• Always wear thick and cushioned gloves when handling a winch, and never use your bare hands, as frayed or sharp cables can injure them. You could pinch or even lose a finger if it’s stuck in the winch, so give yourself the extra layer of protection.
• Grab the hook strap, and not the hook itself when pulling or rewinding the winch cable.
• Wear eye protection in case a cable snaps or debris are projected from the cable or vehicle when it’s being pulled.
• Keep several feet of distance between your hands the winch while winding it into the roller guide.
• Wind your winch the proper tension following the product instructions. You should be able to release the winch drum brake and unwind the cable with ease, without tension. 
• Rewind the cable mechanically by adding the right amount of tension to position the line on the drum to prevent damage.
• Unwind the cable every once in a while to make sure it’s stacked properly on the winch.
• In case the winch cable snaps or breaks when you’re pulling your vehicle, have a winch blanket or damper in place in-between the anchor point and your quad. This can force the winch cable downward if it suddenly breaks so there’s no misdirection and the cable hits someone standing nearby. As you pull your vehicle, reposition the damper or blanket on the cable.

• On the winch, release the drum brake and set your anchor point with the hook strap on your cable. At this point, you don’t have to fully unwind the winch cable for this, unless you need the extra length.
• Grab the winch by the fabric attached to the hook, so there’s never any direct contact between your hand or the metal. Pull the cable from the center of the winch so it doesn’t become snagged or tangled. 
• If you’re using a large, sturdy tree as an anchor point, use a guard strap on the winch to wrap around the base of the tree. Don’t use the winch cable, as this could damage the cable or the tree when pulling out your vehicle, and be a serious risk to injury. You’d only use a higher anchor point on the tree if you were at a difficult angle on a mountainside, for example.
• You can apply a snatch block to your winch to help handle the load, providing a pulley port on the winch line. This will give your winch additional lifting and pulling capacity, but it can add tension to your anchor point, so keep that in mind. You may have more leverage when pulling, with more control of the direction of your winch with the anchor point. You can also use a D-Ring to connect either the winch, Tree Trunk Protector, or chain together to elevate stress on the chain or tree.
• Secure the cable, shackle, and strap on the winch. Confirm that the guard strap is secure on the tree so it doesn’t slip off. 
• Engage the drum clutch on the winch, then start the quad and put it in a neutral gear. If you have remote control operation, use it to wind the cable with a small amount of tension.
• Take it slow and winch at a safe distance, making sure the area is clear surrounding your vehicle and the anchor point. Winch at intervals, giving yourself time to recharge the battery on your vehicle and prevent the winch from running too hot from excessive, heavy-duty use. 
• Once your vehicle is dislodged, ensure the four-wheeler is on flat ground. Put the transmission in park, apply the handbrake and release the tension on the cable. Disconnect the winch cable and free the strap from your anchor point.
