How to Handle Scams & Spam When Selling Your ATV

Selling your four-wheeler online should be quick and painless, as well as one of the best ways to get money for your ATV right away. Unfortunately, you still have to do your part to fight fraud, prevent scam from overtaking your email inbox, and follow tips for safe transactions when selling an ATV or UTV. To keep your experience convenient and secure, ATV Trader is providing a breakdown for how to handle scams and spam when selling your ATV or UTV.

Compare listings for new and used ATVs for sale.

Common Scams to Look Out For

Online marketplaces are incredibly valuable for ATV and UTV owners when selling vehicles, saving tons of time and money. But you should be vigilant when selling your vehicle and detecting a scam to protect yourself online. Know the signs when something’s off, and look out for these common scams.

1. Phony Offer

If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers can try to buy an ATV without negotiation or viewing it in person, which can waste your time, lead to confusing arguments regarding the price and value of your quad, or pressure you into lowering the price. Be firm and straightforward with communication, don’t hide flaws with the vehicle, and keep records when you talk with the shopper.

2. Phishing and Identity Theft

Fraudsters may impersonate an interested buyer and request your sensitive information including banking details, address, or social security number under the guise of processing the transaction. This information can be used for identity theft and other fraudulent activities beyond the sale of your off-roader. ATV Trader will never send emails or text messages with a link instructing you to log into your My Trader account, or give your private information. Do your part and verify the buyer’s identity by doing some background check, verifying their address, phone number, and email.

3. Overpayment

It’s a red flag when selling if you get an offer that’s more than the asking price on your vehicle listing. Scammers might give you a counterfeit check, or try to get a refund on the excess amount to take your money once the payment bounces. Have your financial institution oversee the transaction, and always get the exact payment for your vehicle when you sell. Similarly, don’t hand over the title of your quad until you’ve finalized the payment and have the money secure in your bank account.

4. Shipping Scam

You might have moved along during the transaction to the point of final sale and reach a shipping scam when a fraudulent buyer offers to have a vehicle shipped using a service they control. They might ask for payment upfront and take your money once it’s sent, or blame transportation damage “fees” on a seller that never actually occurred. Trust your instincts as a seller, and check out these means of shipping and storage for trustworthy services.

Stop Spam

Spam is a nuisance, like fake offers from buyers and junk mail, but it doesn’t mean you’re helpless when selling through an online marketplace. ATV Trader does everything it can to stop spam on our website, and we will never sell your information to anyone. Here’s what you can do on your end to prevent spam flooding your email inbox.

1. Create a Separate Sales Email Address

Keep your private email separate from your ATV selling and devote an email address to handling your transaction. This will help keep things organized in one place, and help filter messages to keep spam from going to your personal and business email inbox. It’s also a good idea to not publicly display your personal email when you create your listing for this same purpose.

2. Never Click a Suspicious Link

If you receive an email from an unknown sender or a suspicious message from someone you don’t know, keep things secure and never click links or download attachments. This could compromise your sensitive information during a sale. Never enter your personal details in these emails either. Instead, mark them as spam and delete them.

3. Safeguard Your Email Inbox

Inevitably, spam finds a way into your email inbox even while following the most secure means of protecting your identity and not publicly displaying your information to fraudsters. Set up email filters and spam folders to help redirect annoying and risky emails so you’re not dealing with them on a regular basis. Check the folder every once in a while to make sure you’re not missing any important emails that may have accidentally gone to this folder.

4. Update Your Contact Information

If you’ve been following the steps above and are still getting way too much spam in your email inbox, change your email address. Make sure your listings are updated to reflect this change, and then periodically repeat these steps the more you sell online to slow down and stop spam.

Report Scams and Spam

You can end the vicious cycle of scams and spam online by reporting them to the appropriate authorities. File a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which will contact law enforcement and regulatory agencies at federal, state, local, and international levels. If you believe you’ve been the recipient of a suspicious email, report it to Trader Interactive immediately. Forward it to fraud@traderinteractive.com.
