All about the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 ATV

There are plenty of great ATVs on the market, with a wide range of makes and models designed to match your skill level and riding style. If you’re a beginner, you might want something less powerful to help you stay in control and build confidence. On the other hand, if you rely on your ATV as a workhorse around your property or farm, you’ll likely need a model with enough power to haul tools and materials—especially in areas that are hard to access with standard vehicles. To give you insight into what’s available, we’re spotlighting one of the most popular quads on the market—the Polaris Sportsman XP 1000.

Polaris History

Polaris found its claim to fame for building a vehicle that could travel through snow. Edgar Hetteen, described by the Snowmobile Hall of Fame as the father of the snowmobile, started a company with his brother Allan and another man named David Johnson in Roseau, Minnesota, called Hetteen Hoist and Derrick. The company was renamed Polaris Industries, Inc. in 1954 and released its first production snowmobile in 1955.

They began building ATVs in 1985 with the release of the Trail Boss and Scrambler, becoming the first American company to enter the ATV market, which was dominated by Japanese manufacturers at the time. In 1995, they introduced the Sportsman, which was the first 4×4 ATV with an automatic transmission.

Polaris introduced Victory Motorcycles in 1997 (which continued production until 2017) and later acquired Indian Motorcycles in 2011. They also produced personal watercraft from 1994 to 2004.
