6 Tips for Preventing ATV Theft
The last thing you want to worry about when buying an ATV or UTV is the threat of it being stolen. We have assembled a selection of tips to help prevent theft.
1. Use ATV Locks to Prevent Theft
Remove the keys or keyless fob to your quad, and securely stow them away to prevent an easy opportunity theft. Some ATVs have a steering lock feature you can activate, which will lock your wheels by turning them to the opposite direction. For further protection, you can install a number of anti-theft devices if they’re compatible with your type of vehicle, including:
- Chain and Lock – a simple method of locking up your vehicle anywhere.
- Ground Anchors – Anchors that are bolted to the ground that allow you to use a chain and lock to secure your vehicle.
- Disc Locks – A lock that bolts the holes of your vehicle’s disc brakes, if applicable.
- Handlebar Brake Locks – Locks that prevent the throttle from being used.
- Wheel Locks – A lock on your wheels that prevents rolling.
2. Keep Your ATV in Storage to Deter Theft
Whether it’s a quad you’re using for recreation or one of the most popular types of work ATVs you utilize at a job site, keep your vehicle stored away and out of plain sight. This will hopefully help deter theft, but keeping it out of harsh weather conditions that cause rust and corrosion over time is also a benefit. Store your vehicle behind locked doors in a garage, shed, storage unit, or covered up behind tall and/or wired fencing.
3. Secure or Remove Accessories
Plows, cargo boxes, trailers, GPS units, or whatever other accessories and attachments may be on your machine should be securely locked in place or removed when left unattended in an unsecured area. Removing them can be a pain, but so is replacing them.
4. Install a Security System to Stop ATV Theft
Installing a security system adds another layer of protection against theft and can provide valuable peace of mind. This is especially important for business owners who leave ATVs or UTVs unattended at job sites. Consider using vehicle alarms, GPS tracking devices, or security cameras with live monitoring and mobile alerts to help deter theft and aid recovery. Additional measures, such as visible warning signs or other property security features, can further discourage would-be thieves.
5. Secure Your Trailers Against Theft
Lock up your ATV trailer to prevent thieves driving away with it. Just as you would store away your quad or side-by-side, keep your trailer off the street and locked up in a garage, shed, storage, or covered in a fenced yard. You can also position your ATV or UTV behind the trailer, behind another vehicle, or create obstacles with objects to make it more difficult to steal. Finally, take one more extra step to keep your vehicle and trailer secure by locking the ball and hitch.
6. Make It Easier to Track Down Your Stolen ATV
Take pictures of your vehicle and keep records of the serial number, as these can help authorities identify and recover it. Installing a GPS tracking device can also improve the chances of recovery. If your ATV or UTV is stolen, report the theft to law enforcement immediately. Monitor online marketplaces for suspicious listings that may match your vehicle, and review your insurance policy to ensure theft coverage is included.
A stolen vehicle can quickly derail your next adventure or work project, but taking a few preventive measures can help protect your investment and provide greater peace of mind.
