Defender MAX XT was engineered with your choice of two very capable true-work powerplant options: a powerful 72-hp Rotax HD10 V-Twin tuned for serious work and a serious 61 lb-ft of torque at lower RPMs for true stump-pulling power. The versatile, economical, and work-focused Rotax HD8 V-Twin delivers 50 hp and 50 lb-ft torque still rated to tackle tough tasks.

It starts at the structure: Defender is an extremely capable off-road vehicle and a legitimate workhorse because of its automotive-like technology and fabrication tolerances that are in line with modern pickup trucks. The high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) grade steel means a more rigid design designed to handle the strain of heavy-duty jobs. Can-Am engineers put the Defender frame through the new rigorous Utility Test Cycle its winter and summer testing grounds to ensure its toughness—and it shows.

Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) is tuned for utility while returning renowned Can-Am responsiveness for recreational riding. DPS improves steering feel in slow-speed working situations and in more technical terrain. It's also designed to offer less assistance at high speeds and more assistance at low speeds.
4-mode traction system
Visco-Lok QE front differential combines a lockable rear differential and a 4-mode traction system for multiple choices depending on terrain or task. With separate front and rear toggle switches, drivers can select between a 2x4 open rear differential for tight turning and turf protection, a 2x4 locked rear for improved 2WD traction, a 4x4 open rear for more maneuverability in rugged terrain, and a 4x4 locked rear differential for maximum traction. The rear differential is gear-on-gear to the transmission for better response, no maintenance, better efficiency, and fewer components.
